Have you ever heard of Siena? Probably not, as I hadn't either.
Siena is a medieval Tuscan city outside of Florence. Most of the architecture is gothic, beautiful, and dates back to the 13th century. If you have heard of it, you probably know of the annual Palio horse race that takes place in the Piazza del Campo in the heart of the city (sadly, the weekend after we left). The race dates back to medieval times and features ten racers, each representing a district of the city.
I didn't expect to love Siena as much as I did. The architecture and the way the city was built really made you feel immersed; transported to another place and period in time. I felt like if I turned a street-corner, knight-driven horses could gallop right past me. It's hard not to fall in love with Tuscany's rustic charm and contrasting copper and olive green hues. Also, wine.
Leaving Rome, which felt part ancient, part modern, and stepping into a city that felt so true to it's origins was really refreshing and welcomed.
This is the Piazza del Campo where the Palio races take place. There is a a "track" (a giant oval dirt/sand pit) in the center, viewing stands, and restaurants along the perimeter.
