After we left Siena, our tour guide took us to a "hidden gem" location called Monterigioni, and what a gem it was. Monteriggioni was a 13th century medieval town enclosed by fortification walls. The town itself was small, and was home to around 80 people when it was built.
As soon as we stepped through the gates, I fell in love. It looked like I just stepped into a Tuscan movie set. There were wine shops, outdoor cafe's and bistros, home-made decor and craft shops, an old church and my favorite part, the iconic rust-colored buildings with turquoise shutters.
For two euros, you could gain access to stairs and a balcony that lined the outer walls. From there, you could get some pretty spectacular views of not only the town, but the Tuscan countryside as well.
